Obituary of Bridget K. Tierno

Bridget Kathleen Tierno of Honeoye Falls passed into God's loving arms on November 7, 2019, at 5:00 pm. Her twelve-year battle with cancer did not diminish her spirit, love of God, or love of family and friends. When you met her for the first time you would have seen a bright light from her beautiful blue eyes and a smile as big as the sun.

Quite often she would ask you in her perky little voice the date of your birthday. And without fail, you would receive a birthday card, never a day early or a day late but always on your special day.  Every birthday card was chosen just for you. If she found one that suited you, then it might sit in a file for almost a year until it was mailed. She was that serious about cards of celebration and cards of sadness, and every card was crafted with meticulous penmanship.

Books were a passion that inspired her thoughts and cultivated her passion for others. A teacher for thirty-three years at Martha Brown and Northside Middle Schools in Fairport, N.Y., she had a no-nonsense approach that connected her to her students. As with many teachers of her generation, she inspired them to read, act with civility and be kind. She did it not by force but by leading by example. Decades after her time with them, former students, or their parents,  would seek her out if they saw her in public. It was always a warm and sincere expression of gratitude for how she had guided them through their early years. Those comments always warmed her heart.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years (5-14-83) Joseph P Tierno, sisters Susan Skelly and Marion Overslaugh, and many nieces and nephews.

For many years she was a volunteer with multiple organizations but in recent years she found a perfect fit in the role of Miss Bridget, the schoolmarm at Dayton's Corners. Located in Penfield, N.Y. it is a living museum of a one-room schoolhouse from the 19th century. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to:
