This day, eight years ago, changed our lives. It was different than when Grandma died. For this day, it was your only sibling. We miss him dearly. So now you rejoice as you are together once again, and also with your Mother and Father. There will be greater rejoicing when we are all together again in God's embrace. Until that day we will honor your memory the best we can. Love you Dad!!

Togetherness:
"Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each other, we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the same easy way you always have. Laugh as we always laughed at the silly jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, Pray for me.
Life means all that it has ever meant. It is the same as it always was, there is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of your mind, because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past. Nothing has been lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before...only better. Infinitely happier, we will be one, together forever."

DeAnna posted a condolence
Friday, February 1, 2019
My grandpa was the type of person who finished what he started. The woodworking project. The movie. The TV series. The slice of pie….or the whole pie. So I think it’s fitting that he finished out 2018 in his usual fashion. He was a very exact, precise person evident in everything that he did. In fact, he was the only person I knew that used a letter opener to open his mail, creating a crisp, clean cut.
You could say that my Grandpa was a lot like St. Joseph. His wife was always in the news….Both were talented carpenters, quiet, humble, model fathers providing for their family at all costs. You might say he was like St. Francis, preaching the gospel but using words only when necessary. But from what I could see, my Grandpa was truly the hands and feet of Christ.
He poured out himself into acts of love, crafting for us wooden treasures, or helping each of his children with projects around their homes. He shared his kindness with strangers, too, helping with Meals on Wheels and being an Ombudsman. He participated in much more than I even can recite back to you, and he did it all without desire for recognition or applause. One of my relatives recently reached out to me saying that my Grandpa became a father figure to her after her own father passed away. As stories and memories came out after his passing, I learned he took on the fatherly role for countless others. It was as if his ultimate calling was to be a father to all.
He’s the type of person we should all aspire to be like. Gentle, Selfless, generous of time, talent and treasure. Loving, cheerful, and always seeking to make someone’s day better than his own.
He simultaneously put his family first, while excelling in his career, hobbies, and craft. From the albums and stories, I know he created a life for his family that was memorable, without want, yet humble and modest. Every photo I ever looked at contains beaming faces and bright eyes. You can almost hear the laughter by simply looking at them. Vacations to farms upstate, beach trips, family cookouts; the photos create the most perfect storyline. He was a father who would quite literally cross the country for his family. My Uncle Will shared how my Grandpa travelled to California to help drive his cars and belongings back home once his time in the Air Force was completed. He said one of the cars had an oil leak and they would have to stop often to refill the oil otherwise a cloud of smoke billowed around them. I can’t do the story justice so you’ll have to ask my Uncle for the full version. I know he was the person my mom and Aunt would go to for endless support, encouragement, and a laugh at the most timely of moments.
I’m sure I speak for my sister and cousins when I say that as a grandfather, he made all of our visits fun and memorable. Something as simple as taking a drive in the truck, was far more fun with Grandpa, even if he did make us play the “Quiet Game” after a long day of entertaining all of us. I remember him taking my sister and I to the Fishers Fire House which I thought was the coolest thing because not only did I get to pilfer through the free-to- me snacks, but I could never get over how there were big screen TVs and giant couches at a workplace. One time before a parade, he took my sister and I to the Eastview mall to get out the antique firetruck which was on display inside. I already inherited my Grandma’s love of shopping so getting to drive inside the mall in a fire truck was just about the coolest thing ever. The security guards opened the doors and we slowly drove over the curb and down into town. It was like we were royalty.
My grandpa helped me pick out and purchase my first camera. A digital Kodak, 3.2 megapixel with a screen slightly bigger than a postage stamp. We ordered it from Sears online and went to pick it up in-store . At the time there was a promotion where if you waited longer than a certain amount of time, they had to give you a $5 gift card. Well, we waited only about 30 seconds longer but sure enough my grandpa said to the associate, “uh excuse me, I think you owe us a gift card for waiting too long.” So I took that gift card and put it towards a camera bag reminding me always to speak up about even the small things.
There were only a few times my Grandpa scared me. Usually when I changed the TV channel when he appeared to be sleeping. But the most vivid time was when my cousins, sister, and I were playing with these electronic remote controlled trucks called Roken Boks. I couldn’t get mine to drive with the control so I would resort to pushing it along the carpet with my hand which would apparently burn out the motor. My grandpa did not like that I did that so he said very sternly if I did it again he would pack everything up and return it. Well I did not believe he would do that because the man never returned anything as far as I could tell. Well, wouldn’t you know I pushed the truck along with my hand and he said, “Ok, we’re done. It’s going back.” and he calmly packed up the whole set. I’m pretty sure I sat with my eyes and mouth wide open because I couldn’t believe he actually meant it.
We could always count on my Grandpa to lighten the mood. He didn’t always say a lot, but when he did, there was sure to be a roaring laughter. When taking family photos everyone blames the females for making them take so long, but in our family we always had to take extra shots because he was making a funny face in half of the pictures.
One day at the dinner table, my grandpa very seriously started telling us a story about when he was in school being taught about the vowels. He told us that L used to be a vowel and how he started rattling off the vowels to the nun: “A, E, I, L, O, U.” But she said, “Get the L outta here!!” We all started cracking up.
During college, there was a retreat I went on and my mom had helped gather letters of affirmation from my friends and family as a surprise. She said that she asked my grandpa to write one but he told her, “If DeAnna needs anything all she has to do is call me. That’s all she needs to know.” He was never one, as far as I could see, who was overly affectionate, but we all knew his love for each of us. He was so proud of all of us grandkids. He somehow always knew what was going on in our lives and always had a relevant piece of advice for us.
For those in my family, especially my cousins, who may be experiencing their first loss, I want to share with you a few things I’ve learned. The cruel thing about losing someone you love is that your world stops while everyone around you keeps living. You want to keep up, but you are frozen in time. There are no benchmarks for progress; we all grieve differently. Once you lose someone you love you never stop grieving their physical absence, and you’ll never stop wishing they were still here. Gradually, though, the memories will be easier to replay in your head. It may even get easier for you to look at photos again. Grief reminds us that we have loved and were loved. I hope we can all find comfort in knowing that now He will be with us wherever we are, without suffering or pain, only his warm smile and witty spirit.
I will miss him answering the phone with his distinct, “Hello!?.” Any time I see a red truck I think of him. Marbled rye and pumpernickel bread with tuna salad will always remind me of lunches with him. I hope to never forget but also remember more of his pearls of wisdom:
Love without expectation. Do more than is expected of you. It is the quality of your actions, not the quantity of deeds that matters most.

I am so sorry for your loss. I work at Crest Manor nursing home in Fairport, New York. Bill would come into Crest Manor as our Ombudsman. He was the sweetest, kindest man. I always enjoyed visiting with him when he came in. When the new Ombudsman came in we would ask about Bill but nobody could give us any answers of why he wasn't doing Ombudsman. Again I am truly sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many.

I was saddened today to learn of Bill's death through our pastor at Farmington Friends Church. During my years as a flight instructor and teacher at Edison Tech HS in Rochester, Bill was always so helpful in arranging tours of the Rochester control tower. He helped expose hundreds of area students some of whom are employed today by the FAA in control towers and Air Route Traffic Control Centers across our nation. His friendly and outgoing attitude and enthusiastic presentation to my students was his hallmark. He has contributed mightily to his community through the years. My wife Sally and I send our condolences to his wife Sue, whom we knew when she was running a clothing store in Victor, and the rest of his family. Unfortunately, we are unable to attend the service as we are out of town for several more months.
