Obituary of Mary K. Murphy

Mary Hickey Murphy Canandaigua: Born, August 14, 1920, in Toledo Ohio and died August 5, 2010, in Hospeace House, Naples. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Murphy in 1983. Mary is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Kathleen Sommers of Tuscon, AZ, Karen and Ray Ward of Farmington, NY, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mary enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, serving 2 1/2 years as a 1st Lieutenant during WWII. Mary saw action in the European Theatre of operations and compassionately cared for wounded U. S. soldiers returning from the Normandy invasion. She worked as an industrial nurse in Silver Springs, MD until 1987, moved to Victor in 1996 and entered Horizon's Assisted Living Center, Canandaigua in 2002. When in Horizon's she became active in the Honor Flight Program which brings WWII Veterans for visits to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. She was on the first Rochester Honor Flight in 2008 and the only woman on board. Friends may call Saturday afternoon 1-2 at Lucey-VanVoorhis Funeral Home, 301 West Main Street, Victor. A celebration of Mary's life on what would have been her 90th birthday will follow the calling at 2. Gifts in her memory may be directed to Hospeace House, 7824 County Road 33, Naples, NY 14512.
